Glenise Harvey

Business Owner, Leader and Former Educator

Self-discovery, self-development, and a commitment to being a life-long learner are what I believe to be the key elements to making a difference and serving others.

My twenty-eight-year career in education grounds me in knowing it is my purpose to elevate myself and those around me. I live this purpose as co-owner of A&H Steel as well as in my personal life. The understanding of the importance of raising my own level of consciousness came from reading Richard Barrett’s book “The Values Driven Organization” and becoming aware of the concept that the level of consciousness of a family, a business, an organization or even a nation, will not exceed the level of consciousness of its leaders.

Looking Back

The three phases of my work life.

teaching career

My First Career

I graduated with Distinction from the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta in 1987. I spent the next 28 years as an elementary teacher with the Edmonton Public School Board. Most of those years were spent working with second grade students in high-needs schools. The last three years of my career, I worked exclusively with children ages 7-12 who required extra support developing their reading and writing skills. This was my time to experience “Mastery” as a teacher.

A&H Steel

My Second Career

In 1970 my Stepfather founded A&H Steel, a company specializing in the supply, fabrication and installation of reinforcing steel. In 1971, my mother, who was a skilled drafter with the company, became Andy’s business partner.

In 2006 my Stepbrother and I became the owners of the family business. As our parents aged I became more involved in the company. In the Fall of 2015 I took a leave of absence from teaching to turn my full attention to the business. I retired in the Spring of 2016 to take on Leadership of A&H Steel at the ownership level alongside Craig.

Dandi-Lines Art Gallery

My Third Career

In March of 2017 I held the Grand Opening of Dandi-Lines Art Gallery Foundation, a unique Non-Profit Art Gallery in the community of Strathearn. I made the decision to close the gallery at the end of 2021. The various restrictions due to the pandemic made it difficult to hold the workshops and events that made Dandi-Lines special. Now I am "noodling" on what is next in the realm of creative business endeavors.

Here and Now

Continually growing and developing.

A&H Steel is a Purpose and Values driven organization. Our Purpose is to elevate others. Our Core Values are Integrity, Authenticity, Responsibility, Bigger than Myself and Happiness. My title at A&H Steel is Principal and I lead the People Development and Engagement Department. My role is to operationalize our Purpose and Values, ultimately ensuring that they go beyond being “concepts”, and how we show up for each other and our clients every day.

I believe if all business owners/leaders put an extraordinary effort into nurturing strong cultures and developing their people to have better ways of relating to each other we could ultimately make the world a better place. If people spent their working hours in an environment that developed them both personally and professionally, honored their full self expression and was authentically concerned for their happiness and well-being, those people would potentially go home to their families and out into their communities happier and fulfilled and world could be better for it.

I am continually growing and developing myself personally and professionally. Last year I was enrolled in a course called “Life the Program: Conscious Living for Conscious Leading” with instructor Artemis Evangelidi in Australia. I am a member of the Women’s President’s Organization, Synergy Network in Edmonton, and the Global Institute for Evolving Women (GIFEW) and I am a graduate of several Landmark Worldwide programs. Last summer I participated in “Reclaim Your Best Life”, a program with GIFEW. I am coached weekly by Vik Miraj, whose company, Unstoppable Conversations, has worked closely with A&H, training and developing our employees in our core values. Reading extensively and my love for travel also grow me as a person.

The most important role in my life, however, is being the mother of two amazing young men, Maclean and Brendan. Having these beautiful humans in my world is by far my biggest joy in life!

Looking Ahead

What does the future hold?

Being Principal of A&H Steel and the leader of our culture will continue to be a large part of my foreseeable future. I am passionate about creating a workplace where people feel safe, fulfilled and fully self expressed. If at the end of the day people go home happy it can make a difference to their families and their communities. Business leaders creating better workplaces contributes to creating a better world for everyone.

I will continue to grow myself both personally and professionally through conversations, books, articles, courses, art classes, podcasts, time in nature, meditation, travel, and whatever other interesting experiences come my way!

Musings

tran·quil
/ˈtraNGkwəl/

adjective
1. free from disturbance; calm.
   "her tranquil gaze"

For the last twelve years I have chosen a word for the year. These are words that represent what I would like to be more of, have more of and live into. This year my word is “Tranquil”. The past decade of my life has been anything but that. Leaving my marriage, transitioning from a career in Education to a leadership role in the family reinforcing steel business, opening a not for profit Art Gallery, losing my father and my step father within weeks of each other, doing life during a global pandemic ... it has felt a little like I have been cartwheeling and back flipping in a Cirque de Soleil performance with my hair on fire. Last year’s word was “Ease” and when Covid hit I had a WTF moment. I boarded a plane on March 11, 2020 for New Zealand to visit my youngest son. When I landed, I found out a global pandemic had been declared. I was to have been in New Zealand for 21 days and instead I came home 9 days later to a silent city and two weeks of quarantine. That same month our new rebar fabrication facility in British Columbia started operating. None of this was occurring to me as “Ease”. But when I got to the end of 2020 and I reflected on the year, I came to the realization that much of it had not been “easy”, however, all things considered, “ease” had been present. It showed up in all the amazing humans I am blessed to do life with. Family, friends and co-workers brought ease and grace to the not so easy situations that we encountered together, in turn helping me to show up with ease.

When it came time to choose a word for 2021, I struggled to land on one. I tried on a few, but none caused a vibration in my soul. Then at some point in early January the pull toward “Tranquil” started. The image came to me of a stormy ocean. I saw myself dive into the water, but I didn’t try to swim, instead I pushed down, going deeper and deeper until I found that place far below where there is stillness and silence ... that place “free from disturbance; calm.” Life is going to happen, and I can toss and bounce around on top of the waves or I can go deep and find my “Tranquil”. I own a mug on which is written ... “Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.” I want to be the “Tranquil” that shows up in the midst of the noise, the trouble and the hard work. I want to bring “Tranquil” to all my conversations with my loved ones in my family, at work, and in my circle of friends. I want “Tranquil” to surround me in my home, our offices, and at my Gallery. I want to pull “Tranquil” into all aspects of my life, so whatever is happening externally I can go deep into that space where it is still and silent in my head and heart.

As you read this, I invite you to dwell on the word “Tranquil”. How can you personally be more tranquil in your life? Might meditation, going for walks, painting, golfing, playing in the park with your children, working on an old car in the garage, help you to be tranquil? What can you do to have more Tranquil in your life ... a fountain in the backyard, flowers in pots, candles in the kitchen, a fire in the backyard firepit, wind chimes on the deck? When you wake up in the morning think about living into Tranquil by taking a few minutes to review your day and visualizing yourself moving through every conversation, every meeting, every appointment, every situation, in a state of Tranquil.

With the global pandemic continuing to impact all of us in so many ways, the world desperately needs Tranquil energy to counteract the fear energy that is so prevalent. We can all do our part to intentionally create ourselves to vibrate at the higher Love energies and help humanity get through this with more ease and grace.
